Our Students

Daniel “Lucky” Muhwezi

Daniel was born on 5th Feb 1981. A Congolese refugee, Daniel is from Ishasha in the North Kivu region of the Congo. He was awarded an Educate! scholarship in 2004 and attended Sir Tito Winyi Secondary School in Hoima, Uganda.

Due to outstanding academic performance, Daniel received a scholarship to pay for his tuition (Educate! pays for the rest of his expenses) from an NGO called HPCT. HPCT receives a contract from the UNHCR (the UN's refugee agency) to promote educational progress in Ugandan refugee camps. HPCT thus aims to promote education by giving scholarships to the brightest and hardest working students. It gave two scholarships the year Daniel received his, one to a student of each gender, and Daniel was the male recipient. Daniel was awarded the scholarship after finishing first out of 572 students who took the required test in all of Kyangwali Refugee Camp.

In 2008, Daniel attended Makerere University, studying Information Technology in a three-year program. In school he is a discussion group leader—he draws timetables and organizes for course work and links group members to lectures.

In addition to his schoolwork, Daniel started an environmental awareness club at his school called Tree Talk. With Daniel’s leadership, Tree Talk has planted over 50 trees around campus.

Daniel, and three other Educate! students were elected by their peers to represent them on the Educate! student board of directors, which acts as a bridge between the students and the organization. His roles include uniting and encouraging Educate! students, finding problems facing Educate! students, coming up with solutions to the problems and forwarding the solutions to the Educate! executive directors.

In addition to this prestigious position, Daniel and other students started a youth club known as COBURWAS. COBURWAS stands for the countries in the great lakes region, including the Congo, Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda and Sudan. Daniel works as the Secretary General for this group.

In his own words, “We came to the notice that our countries face wars, corruption, diseases, poor resources, exploitation which has led to massive killing of people, the raise in number of orphans and widows, abuse of human rights, unemployment, poverty and under-development in our countries. The most causes of all these are lack of love and unity among the youths, which brings nepotism, corruption and misunderstanding between different tribes hence tribe conflicts, divisions and crushes.”

“If we can unite and bring love among the youths especially in Kivu region then we shall prosper. We happy that COBURWAS is opening branches in different parts and getting much support in the community.”

His future goal is to “Work for peace, unity and development mostly in my country of origin through entrepreneurship and the modern ICT.”

“With Educate! our dreams will come true", as the new day starts more ideas come to my mind on possibly how we can make a difference back home this is because of great step Eduacte! has taken to provide us with quality Education which is ephasising on inovations, self sustainability and outstading leadership skills. "Educate! has endeed restored our hopes" to cause great impacts transformation back home.”
